Bishop’s History with the NBA

Bishop Robert E Joyce, or REJoyce as he is known, has been Chaplain of the Detroit Pistons since 1990. His ministry involves pre-game chapels, family counseling, weddings and premarital counseling  (yes, he performed a wedding during halftime in 2006), baby dedications and mentoring. His ministry has grown from the pioneering stages to its current popularity as one of the most active chapels in the NBA, sought out by other teams. Bishop Joyce says,”I enjoy creating an environment where the players can be regular guys, not worrying about making a shot or being in a “fish bowl” where every action is scrutinized. They’ve played at my church three on three and five on five. My goal is to see the players become chaplains themselves”.

Chauncey Billups and Tayshaun Prince stroll from the Pistons' locker room into an adjacent dressing room an hour before tip-off, drawn by the gospel tunes playing from the small radio Pastor Robert Joyce has perched on a folding chair. Other Palace workers and family members are already in their seats, studying the biblical verses printed on the sheets of paper Joyce has placed on each chair.
